Jiří Hybler (15. 4. 1949–25. 7. 2024) Image Jiří Hybler studied geology at the Faculty of Science and was directed to crystallography, which was then beginning to develop rapidly in our country, by Professor Jiří Novák. He put him in contact with Associate Professor Syneček in the Metals Department of the then Institute of Solid State Physics in Cukrovarnická, where Jiri started his career. 

Cosmic strings are predicted in many particle physics models beyond the Standard Model. If such a model describes our universe, a network of strings inevitably forms in the early universe and persists to the present time. Cosmic strings lead to nonlinear density fluctuations at early times and will dominate the nonlinear structure at high redshifts. I will discuss how cosmic string loops dominate the halo mass function and can lead to early galaxy formation and to the formation of supermassive black holes at high redshifts. Long string segments lead to wakes which leave behind characteristic imprints in 21-cm redshift maps.

Eleven enthusiastic students from high schools in and around Olomouc participated in the Summer School of Optics, which was organized for the tenth time by the Joint Laboratory of Optics. A week full of science allowed them to take a peek into the secrets of optics and get acquainted with the latest findings in this promising field. Image Show all 7 photos
